Political Repression in Algeria and beyond

Discussion with Sofian Philip Naceur (Rosa Luxemburg Foundation Tunis, Journalist Tunis/ London) on political repression, the situation of political prisoners, and the expansion of migration control and border violence in Algeria and the whole region.

Since the failure of the Hirak protest movement in 2020, the spirit of optimism and euphoria in Algeria has given way to resignation and repression. Dissidents, activists, journalists, and trade unionists have once again been systematically intimidated, arrested on politically motivated charges, prosecuted, and imprisoned. Critical media, labor disputes, and refugees are criminalized, and opposition NGOs and parties are banned. Similar developments can be observed in other countries of the region, e.g., Egypt and Tunisia.

In order to push ahead with their modernization and to bind European trading partners more closely to itself, regimes continuously expand their anti-migration cooperation with Europe. This includes police agreements with European states and a substantial expansion of deportation cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). At the same time, arbitrary arrests of migrants and refugees and mass deportations continue unabated.
